EFFECTIVE CORRECTION FOR THE “REVOLVING DOOR” STUDENT Say what you Mean – and Mean what you say. We all have seen the same student waiting once more to see the principal for disciplinary consequences. What we don’t see is what motivates the student to repeat offenses in the classroom and unstructured environments. Joey’s utilizing his proven program and book “Discipline for Success” will clearly point out three revealing reasons why students repeat self defeating behaviors. Also discussed will be effective strategies to stop repeat offenders in your classroom by a variety of innovative corrective approaches which motivate proper behavior. Also, Rhodes a former law enforcement officer will describe how to interrogate a student using the “RPM” approach to solving the most difficult mysteries and issues. Students respect disciplinarian that are proactive, rather than reactive. To achieve this outcome, teacher must be willing to deal with discipline in the classroom and not outsource too often to secondary and third parties that have little bonding attractions for the student. Rhodes will provide special handouts of specific guidelines and methods to the first 25 attendees seated. Grade Level 4-12 Special Ed/Discipline/Motivation/Behavior

Teaching the Child that Can Push Your Button! Oppositional-Defiant Disorder in children and Conduct Disorder in adolescents—similar disturbances at different points in development—are difficult problems to treat, and are frustrating for teachers, therapists, and parents alike. Outcome research has demonstrated that traditional therapy based on talking about feelings is an ineffective intervention for these clients, and for a long time, these common disorders were considered untreatable. ODD and CD are difficult disorders to treat because their development is due to a combination of genetic, cognitive, parenting and family systems factors. In order to be effective, therapy must address these several levels of the disturbances. This training will review the outcome research on ODD and CD in order to identify the therapeutic techniques that have proven effective with disruptive behavior disorders. These interventions generally involve a synthesis of cognitive-behavioral, parent training and family systems approaches. The training will focus on step-by-step instruction in these techniques, including effective rules and consequences, reinforcement systems, time out, problem-solving, enhancing family communication and balancing firmness and softness in the parent-child relationship. We will discuss how to integrate research findings and clinical reasoning in treatment planning, and clinical examples from the instructor and participants will be used to illustrate how the interventions can be customized for individual clients.
